Tip of the Week: Brunettes! Skip the fade by Kimberley Pierce

Skip the fade in a few easy steps.

Wait 24 to 48 hours after coloring hair before washing it. This should allow hair color plenty of time to set, making it more resistant to fading. Also, avoid hair products that contain sulfate of any type. Sulfates like "sodium lauryl sulfate" or "sodium laureth sulfate" are too harsh for your brunette, color-treated hair. Besides giving you a deep, detergent-worthy clean, they can wash away color and natural oils.

Frequent hair washing can make your brunette color fade rapidly. Do not wash hair every day. Go for every other day, if possible. When you do wash hair, use cool or lukewarm water rather than hot. Hot water opens the hair cuticle, making your hair dull and flat.

Keep in mind that temporary colors will fade quickly. If you want long-lasting, brunette hair color, select a high-quality, permanent hair dye.
